Date Posted: 11:31:04 10/01/02 Tue I walked down to the barn and I saw Kim plating and knotting at Diablo's mane. I walked past the next stall and I saw Clara doing the same thing to Tonto’s. I started laughing, because they were twins doing the same thing to their twin horses, and I asked them what they were doing. They both jumped at the same time. “Urm...........well...........” Clara stammered. “I think we should tell her Kim” “Oh ok, mum we have been working on a little show. It is not that much but today we were going to show you” Kim said. “Oh ok, finish getting ready then while I see what Staci has been working on this week” I replied “Ok” they said at the same time. Every week now I was going to take 1 morning off to watch my kids with their horses and see how they were getting on. First up for the morning was Staci. Staci has only had her new filly Charming for a week so I was going to see how she was getting on with her new challenge. I went to the filly’s stall but she was not there. I walked around the other side of the barn and I could see her in the lunging arena with charming. I walked over to them and I lent over the edge of the fence to watch Staci work. She had already set the filly off at a steady canter around the arena. She then lengthened the lunge rope. She sent the filly over a 1” jump on the lunge 3 times before she noticed me. “Oh hi mum, sorry I wanted to give her a lunge before I rode her.” “Ok, she can jump 2” on he lunge but she has not jumped that high with a rider. Maybe you could try her with that today” I suggested “Ok, let me go and tack her up and I will meet you in the jumping ring” I walked down to the jumping ring and I put up a course of 1” jumps with the last one at 2”. Staci rode into the ring and went over one of the 1” fences to practise and get used to Charming’s technique over the jumps. Then she started to take her round the course. Her technique needed working on as it was a bit mixed up and her stride was not always right. Staci was going to need to work on that with charming. But Staci got charming over the fences and then took her up to the 2” jump. This time charm just refused and ran straight out. Staci gave her a tap with the crop and took her to it again. This time charming stopped so suddenly that Staci went over the jump without her. Charm took off so I ran to catch her and I led her back to Staci who was moving the fence. We put one side of the fence up against the wall. Staci mounted her and rode her up to the fence. Staci pulled one rein towards the wall so charming could not run out. Staci then used her crop lightly on charm’s neck to tell her that she meant business. Charm jumped it but very badly and she started having a bucking fit afterwards. After charm had stopped I told Staci to leave it there for today and I would double check her tack and call the vet out to make sure she had not got anything wrong with her back, which was causing the behaviour. So Staci took charming into her stall and un-tacked her while I went into the indoor jumping arena to watch Clara and Kim. When I arrived they were already mounted and were riding Tonto's and Diablo around the outside to warm them up. They had put their best jackets on and there best riding clothes. They looked great. They told me to sit down and close my eyes. I sat down and when I opened my eyes again they had set up jumps that both of the horses would fit over at the same time. I watched the as they went over all the 3 to 4" jumps at the same time and the same speed. I was really pleased with them and I told them that it was great. I told them some of the bits that they could change to make it more challenging for both them and the horses. I told them that they needed to practise the new course I had done for them and show that one to me next week. When I had finished with those two I went to find Jamie. He has had two bits for quite a while now but I have not seen him ride her. So I had set up a challenging dressage test that I had given him yesterday. He had had last night and this morning to learn it and perfect it. If he did it right I would know that he had been working with bits since he had got her. With a hard test like I had given him he would need the trust and partnerships with his horse which only comes from a lot of work and training. So I told Jamie to bring bits into the dressage arena. He warmed her up then walked her out again to start his test. He rode in and did the test perfectly apart from some tiny mistakes. I asked Jamie to dismount and I showed him how to correctly do the parts he got wrong then I asked him to go though the whole test again. This time he did it perfect and I was very happy with him. I told him to practise his cross-country for next week. Last of all I went to find Amanda. She had train wild so she was perfect now. I could remember when wild really was quite wild and lived up to her name. But Amanda had spent a long time with her and now there was finally hardly anything more that they could teach each other. I went into wilds stall to talk to Amanda. I told her that it was time for her to buy a new and more challenging mount. In the end she agreed so today I went into my stallion barn to find a suitable stallion for her to ride. I wanted Amanda to buy a stallion to train because they are a lot more challenging than most of the mares. Amanda had helped me, Kim and Clara train Tonto and Diablo so I thought she was up for the challenge. I looked around the stallion barn. I could not decide who would be suitable for her. Then ,almost as if out of nowhere I thought of spice. I found it hard to control spice sometimes she Amanda would have her work cut out but I thought she would be able to handle him. So I tacked him up and I took him to Amanda. Amanda was going to work on her gallop today. Amanda often had trouble with her balance in gallop. So we went down to one of our larger fields. It was safer if you galloped when you are learning in a field encase you happen to fall off and you horse does not want to stop. So we worked on Amanda's gallop which had got allot better over the past 2 weeks that she had been specially concentrating on it. When she had finished Amanda said to me “couldn't you have got a more challenging stallion out for me” We both were in a fit of giggles and we did not calm down until we went in for dinner after we had un-tacked spice.
