Jon walked out to the pasture, smiling to himself. Today, he and his mom were going to break his filly to rider. Zoe snorted when she saw Jon and trotted over eagerly. The teenager smiled and evaded the filly�s playful nip. He led her to the barn and hooked her in crossties. He brushed off her glossy paint coat and picked her hooves. The filly�s perfect confirmation and wonderful gaits would make her the perfect riding horse, once they got her broken to rider. He laid the western saddle on her back and tightened the girth. He bridled the filly easily and led her out to the arena. He clipped the lunge line to her bridle and started her on a circle around him. He lunged her at the walk, trot, and canter, smiling as she glided forward in smooth gaits. He grinned and slowed her to a walk. His mom, who had been watching, stood up and walked over. She gripped Zoe�s reins, patting the filly reassuringly. Jon stood on the mounting block and slowly leaned weight on the filly�s back. She snorted but remained still. Jon carefully settled all his weight into the saddle and gathered the reins loosely. Susan led the pair around a few times and then helped Jon slowly dismount. They led the filly to the barn, pleased.
AFTER A MONTH�
Jon led Zoe to the arena and mounted carefully. The green filly snorted eagerly and set off in a nice walk. She was relaxed, fluid, and a perfect western horse. When he squeezed gently, asking for a jog, she gave a quick buck and moved into a nice, easy jog. �Good girl!� Jon praised Zoe happily. He tried to circle her and she listened to his leg as they moved on a nice 20 meter circle. Jon rode the wonderful paint filly for 20 minutes and then led her to the barn. He untacked her quickly and carefully, before putting her in a paddock with Belle and giving her a carrot.
