"Mom! Heaven's limping!" Hannah calls, slowly leading the gray gelding up from the paddock. Heaven would barely put weight on his right foreleg. Saddle rushes out of the barn and gasps. Hannah slowly leads him to the barn and crossties him. Saddle runs her hand down his leg and frowns. "Hannah, i can't feel any breaks and theres no heat in his leg, i'm not sure what it is" Saddle tells her softly. "I'll call the vet" Hannah says, rushing to the office. She walks out a few minutes later "The vet will be here in a few minutes, she's nearby" Hannah replies. Saddle nods, gently stroking the geldings face and talking to him softly. Heaven was Saddle's old event gelding and she had a very strong bond with him. Hannah paces nervously up and down the barn isle. Finally the vet walks in. she looks over Heaven and shakes her head. "I'm not sure what it is, i want to take some x-rays and i'm going to go devolop them myself right away" the vet tells Saddle and Hannah. Hannah nods and Saddle prepares Heaven to be x-rayed. The vet brings in the portable x-ray machine and x-rays Heaven. After they take x-rays of his shoulder, leg and hoof the vet gives him a shot of bute to help ease the pain and Hannah turns the horse into his stall. "I'll be back with teh x-rays as soon as they're devoloped" the vet promises. Hannah nods and Saddle thanks her. Hannah walks up to the loft and drops a flake of hay through Heaven's hay chute, then checks to make sure his water bucket is full. "Hannah, you should ride Dream now, it will give you something to do. the vets at new bolton were very impressed with how well she has recovered" Saddle tells her. Hannah nods and slowly walks down to get Dream from the pasture. she leads the filly back up, grooms her and tacks her up. then she leads her to the riding ring and mounts. the filly eagerly walks around the ring, her long legs easily covering the ground in the ring. after a few laps in each direction, she asks the filly to trot. Dream responds instantly. she moves into an extended trot and gives a few small bucks. Hannah sits back and controls the filly easily. she keeps the horse's mind working by performing circles, serpintines and changes of rein frequently. Soon, she sees the vet's red truck pulling down the driveway. she slows Dream to a walk and then a halt, dismounts and leads her to to the barn. She quickly untacks her and puts her in her stall with some carrots in her feed bucket. the vet slowly walks down the barn isle. Saddle hurries out of her office. "Whats the news?" Saddle asks nervously. the vet shakes her head "It doesn't look too good. he has some navicular changes in both forelegs and he also has arthritis in his knees and shoulders.." The vet says... "But that shouldn't make him so lame so suddenly, should it?" Hannah asks. "No, he also has a fractured coffin bone" The vet replies sadly. "NO! not Heaven!" Hannah exclaims. "I'm sorry, you have two choices, he will be able to recover fully from the fractured coffin bone, but the arthritis and navicular are untreatable. You can either put him to sleep now, or we can put him on complete stall rest until his coffin bone heals and start him on ixosuprine and bute, then put him down once he's in too much pain to keep him alive" the vet tells Saddle and Hannah. "We can't put him down!" Hannah exclaims. "Hannah, please either calm down or go up to the house" Saddle tells her patiently. Hannah quiets down and Saddle looks to the vet "How long do you think he has before its going to be too painful for him?" Saddle asks. "Most likely no more than a year, the navicular is pretty advanced and so is the arthritis. I'm suprised he stayed completely sound so long, actually" the vet tells them. "Heaven's a fighter" Saddle replies softly. "Hannah, what do you think?" Saddle asks her. "I can't decide right now, do we have to chose right now?" Hannah says quietly. "No, you don't have to chose now. i'll give you a supply of bute and some mild tranquillizers for him for now and when you chose you can call me" the vet tells them. "Thank you" Saddle tells the vet. Hannah nods. "We'll call you as soon as we decide." Saddle says finally. the vet smiles and nods, then leaves. "Ok, run up to the house and tell Mikki, Jessie, Maggie and Michelle to get their lazy butts down here and help us feed these horses" Saddle tells Hannah, trying to be cheerful, "We'll talk about Heaven later"
