Date Posted: 16:20:56 10/28/02 Mon I heard a vehicle pull into the driveway of Timeless Farm & park.I walked out to see Angel getting out of a truck.I walked over to her & said "hi there Angel." Angel said "hello," back to me.I told her "well, once you have your horse unloaded, you can put him in the first stall of the show barn, which is to the right of the barn I just came out of.Angel nodded & unloaded Sweet October.She followed me t the show barn & put October in a stall.Then she went back to the trailer & got out October's tack & her chaps & riding helmet. Angel quickly got October ready as I watched."Follow me to the outdoor jumping arena," I said to Angel.She followed me to the outdoor jumping arena & mounted October."Now today," I said, "I want to evaluate how you ride.On the flat & over jumps.I know you normally do 5'-6" on him, but we're going to just do a 4 foot course today.So warm him up, & I'll watch how you ride." Angel nodded & I watched as she warmed up Sweet October.Angel had good riding position, she kept her heels down & still, she sat up in the saddle & had a quiet seat. Her hands weren't a still as they could be, & she could use a bit more contact with the saddle, but over all, her position was good.I called to her "try to keep your hands still & keep a little more contact with the saddle.Angel nodded as she posted to October's trot & stilled her hands & increased her contact with the saddle.After Angel had warmed up October, I set some jumps to 4 feet & a few jumps to 3'-6" as a warm-up.I said to Angel "jump the coop first, then the green vertical & then make a medium-sized turn to the light blue, green & pink colored oxer." Angel nodded & squeezed October into a canter. October took the coop like it was nothing, & Angel had a nice crest release, & sat back on the landing.October cantered on to jump the green vertical & then Angel & October made a wide turn to the oxer & October bounded over the fence.Angel slowed him down to a walk."Now I'm going to have you do a quick course.I'll tell you what to jump when you do the course.go over the fake wall first, then do the bright yellow & white striped triple." Angel got October cantering & headed him towards the first jump.Angel had October collected, then let him out over the jump, then got him collected again.They cantered on to the yellow& white striped triple.I called "bright blue oxer, liverpool, combination." Sweet October leaped the triple & the bay stallion & Angel went on to do the rest of the course with me calling out what to jump. Angel & October only knocked one rail doing the combination. Once Angel & October finished the course, Angel slowed October to a walk.I said "your position was good, & you & October made very good turns.You didn't collect October enough for the combination, so that was why he knocked that rail.But you did very well.Thats it for today.Sorry this was kind of a short lesson, but next time we're going to do some higher jumping, & run through a 2nd level dressage test.Ok with you?" Angel nodded & said "fine with me.I'll walk out October now.Oh, & by the way, I think you already know, but Jacklyn is coming over with my mom." I nodded."Yeah, I already knew.Just then, Angel & I heard a car pull into the driveway."I'm guessing that would be my mom & Jacklyn," said Angel. "Probably so.I have to go now, but I will see you in 3 days, ok?" "fine with me." "good, see ya in 3 days." "you to!" With that said, & jogged out to where Mal & Jacklyn we're getting out of Mal' s car."Hey Mal, Hey Jacklyn!" I called.Both of them said hello.Mal said "I' ve got to run, but I will be back to pick up Jacklyn when her lesson is over. " I nodded & said "fine with me." Mal asked me "by the way, how did Angel' s lesson go?" "Great," I replied.Mal said good-bye, hopped into her car & left. "Well," I said to Jacklyn, "I think you already know, but I'm Dana.I'm going to be giving you a riding lesson today, but my daughter, Arianna, will help you get the pony you are riding all tacked up." Jacklyn nodded."Follow me, " I said to her.I led Jacklyn to the gelding's barn, where Arianna was putting Quelle Shance(pronnounced Kelle Shawnce)"Danny" in the crossties. I siad to Jacklyn "this is Arianna, I'll see you in a bit." & with that, I left."Ok then," said Arianna, "I'm Arianna, but you can call me Ari." Jacklyn said, "I'm Jacklyn." Arianna nodded & asked her "so are you excited about today' s lesson?" Jacklyn smiled & nodded energeticly.Arianna told her the light grey pony in the crossties name, "This is Danny." Jacklyn asked "can I pet him?" Arianna nodded & said "sure you can pet him.You'll be riding him after all." Jacklyn smiled & petted Danny's fuzzy, light grey Shetland pony nose. Arianna asked Jacklyn "so do you know how to tack up a horse or pony?" Jacklyn bit her lip & said "well, I know a bit about grooming a horse, & I know what you tack up a horse with." Arianna nodded & said "well, I'll show you today. " Jacklyn said "ok." "Now when you groom a horse, the first thing you use is called a curry comb.*Arianna holds up a curry comb to Jacklyn*You brush circles with it, to bring any dirt, dust or dead hair to the surface of the coat.*Arianna currys Danny a bit*Now you try." "Alright," says Jacklyn.Arianna hands the 6 y/o girl the curry comb & watches as Jacklyn currys Danny."Now once your done currying a pony, you use a hrad brush.You flick it over the coat to get all of the dust, dirt & dead hair off.*Arianna shows Jacklyn how to use a hrad brush on a horse*Now you only want to use the hard brush on the main body & the legs of the horse.Don't brush any sensitive areas." Arianna said.She hands Jacklyn the hard brush & helps her brush Danny.Then Arianna shows Jacklyn how to use a soft brush on a horse, & how to pick a horses hooves.Once Arianna & Jacklyn finished brushing Danny, Arianna showed Jacklyn how to tack up a horse or pony.With that done, Jacklyn follows Arianna to the indoor arena.Arianna shows Jacklyn the basics of lunging when she lunges Danny.Then, Arianna said "now you can put on your helmet.My mom will be here in a sec. to give you your lesson." Jacklyn straps on her helmet & waits for Dana to arrive.A minute later, Dana walked into the arena."Hi Jacklyn," she said, "lets get you mounted on Danny." Jacklyn nodded & followed Dana as she took Danny's rein from Arianna & led him over to the mounting block.Dana showed Jacklyn how to mount properly & Jacklyn got on Danny.Dana clipped a lunge line to Danny's bridle & led him to the middle of the arena."Now first of all, we need to work on your basic position. Do you know anything about riding position?" said Dana."well," Jacklyn said, "I know that your supposed to keep your heels down, sit up tall in the saddle & I know how you hold the reins." "Good," Dana said with a nod, "well can you keep your heels down, sit up tall in the saddle for me?" Jacklyn did that. "Now there are a lot of other things you need to know about riding position, so here's whats first.You want to stretch your whole leg & your heels down, & you want to keep your reins by Danny's withers, or right about where Danny' s mane starts.You want to keep your hands about 4 inches apart & you want to keep your rein even..." Dana told Jacklyn about what your riding position for about 5 mintues while Jacklyn rode on Danny at a walk.She soaked up every word, wanting to learn as much as she could about riding."So do you want to trot now Jacklyn?" I asked."Ok," she said, "is it REALLY bouncy though?" I smiled "no, its not THAT bouncy, but it is bouncy, you just have to post, & you won't feel the bounce though." Jacklyn said "posting?" "Yes, posting." "how do you do that?" "you go up & down in the saddle." "ok, then I guess I want to trot." "good, give Danny another squeeze then." With that said, Jacklyn squeezed Danny into a trot & imediately began posting.I said to Jacklyn "now when your posting, you have to be on the right diagonal.You will know you are on the right diagonal if you are out of the saddle when Danny's leg nearest the wall comes forward.Now, are you on the right diagonal?just look down at Danny's outside leg." Jacklyn did so & said "I don't think I'm on the right diagonal." "then what you do is sit for a beat.a trot has a 1-2 beat, so sit for that 1-2 & that is a beat.Jacklyn tried it & was now on the right diagonal."Keep your heels down while your posting," I called.Once Jacklyn had trotted for a while in both directions & had walked Danny for a while, I said "are you getting a little tired?" Jacklyn nodded."Well, we'll call that a lesson, so now you can dismount.Now you always dismount on the left side of the horse, so take you feet out of the stirrups, then swing over Danny's side & then you have dismounted." Jacklyn did so."Great dismount," I told her.Jacklyn said "thanx."I led Danny back to his stall with Jaacklyn following & showed her how to untack Danny.I let her lead Danny to the pasture & turn him out with me by her.Then we walked to the stable yard.Mal was waiting there by her car."So how did Jacklyn's lesson go?" she asked."Just great," said Jacklyn.I nodded.Mal & I talked for a few minutes before Mal said it was time to go.I said good-bye to them & they said goodbye back.I waved as they got in the car & pulled out of TF's driveway...
