Date Posted: 15:43:02 11/27/02 Wed Laura walked out to the paddock and opened the gate. She whistled and JJ cantered over, eager to go. “No, boy. I need to ride, Toffee.” The teen said, smiling brightly. She walked over to Toffee, patting his sleek chesnut neck. She led him to the barn and tacked him up for a basic lesson. She and her mom were going to watch his movement and check out how he went with a rider. She led him to the barn and saw Susan, her mom, waiting for her. “He has excellent ground manners!” Laura said, patting the pony. “Good. Alrighy, mount up and put him through a good warm up.” Susan replied briskly. Laura swung into the saddle and felt Toffee’s energy quivering beneath her. She squeezed and he stepped out in an energetic walk, tossing his head. Laura sponged the reins and felt the pony begin to relax. “Good boy.” She praised, putting him on a circle to help with bending. He moved nicely beneath her and she kept a firm contact. “Go ahead and trot, Laura.” Susan called, watching the Australian Pony skeptically. Laura squeezed firmly and Toffee moved into a smooth, gliding trot. Laura posted gently and guided the 6 y/o through some basic figures. “Sitting trot!” Suan called. Laura settled into the saddle and sat perfectly to his smooth gait. “Canter!” Susan called. Laura slid her leg back and bumped the gelding firmly. He cantered swiftly forward, on the wrong lead. Laura corrected him and they did a circle. After a few more minutes, Susan walked into the center of the ring. “Alright, I see some issues to work out, but he seems alright. I’m going to set up a few low crossrails for you two to take. Take them nice and easy. We want to see how he jumps. Trot him over the first two, canter over the last two.” She said, putting the last rail onto the pole. Laura nodded and trotted towards the first crossrail. Toffee tensed up and bounced nervously over it. He did the same over the next rail and then broke into a choppy, nervous canter. He popped over the next two hesitantly. “Ugh. He needs lots of work, Laura. Let’s take him back to the barn and write up a training schedule.” Susan said, looking determined. They quickly untacked and turned out Toffee and then wrote up this schedule. ~Problems~ 1. Difficult to bend 2. Has trouble with canter leads 3. Nervous about jumps 4. Tense movement ~Training Schedule~ 1. Work with him on circles and serpentines more often, especially at trot 2. Teach him bend first, over bend him before canter and do canter serpentines 3. Work him over small fences until they become basic to him 4. Will come with other skills [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
