"Yet it is true that many non-believers share the believer's convictions regarding the immorality of certain of the sexual practices we have considered. Why is this so? I think that an important reason is that many religious convictions about practical moral issues have become imbedded into our considered moral judgments. Because of the influence and historical power of Chritianity throughout the ages certain beliefs about the immorality of particular actions became an integral part of our moral education and customs. Hence many nonbelievers still think that adultery, promiscuity, etc. are morally pernicious even though they deny the existence of the Christian God. Under my analysis, however, these actions are not immoral (presupposing no promise-breaking, deception, or exploitation) once belief in the Christian God is abrogated. Once sexual interactions are viewed as being contractual and reciprocal we have a basis for judging their morality independent of any reliance upon the laws of a supernatural being".
