A Negro boatman looked up to see Trent Lott approach him. Trent was holding a noose in his hand. "Take me across the river", Trent said. The Negro replied, "Only if you keep your rope to yourself."

With that settled, the Negro rowed Trent across the river. Halfway across, Trent put the noose around the Negro's neck and choked him. Desperate for air, the Negro clutched at the rope. Soon they came to a roaring falls, and with his last breath, just before they were dashed on the rocks, the Negro asked "Why?"

Trent Lott said, "It's my nature"
