Subject: Question

I have one question, which I'm hoping someone will be able to answer!

In Neo's meeting with the Architect, the A he says that the reboot of
the whole Matrix has happened on several occasions, i.e. this is the nth
time they have done it and have been efficient at destroying Zion over
and over.

In this case, the suggested plot for Revolutions is based around the
fact that Agent Smith is now able to clone himself, take over the newer
agents, etc, and for this reason, the machines eventually call a truce
with Neo as long as he can kill Smih to stop him overloading the Matrix.

Question - why has Smith suddenly got the power to overload the Matrix,
whereas in previous versions of the Matrix he couldn't have (because it
has been rebooted time and time again without being overloaded)?? He
must have fought 'The One' in previous versions to allow The One to
realise his/her true powers and destroy Smith?? Are we saying that The One
never destroyed him previously??

Sorry - a bit long winded!
