Thanks for the great info! I am still torn between P & O as to which is the Mother of the Matrix, but here is another thought:

Instead of being an earlier version of the One, as many have speculated, and which I totally disagree with, perhaps the Merrovingian is a previous version of Smith. I think agent Smith was a byproduct of Neo being reborn as the One after he died, sort of a consequence, an anti-One.

Perhaps the same thing happens each time that the One is fully born. The Merrovingian was a program, maybe not an agent but who knows, who had a brush with a previous Neo and gained powers just like Smith did. When the previous Neo entered the source and reinserted his code (or whatever) this put a stop to the proliferation of the evil one. But even though he was contained, the evil one is still around with enhanced powers, i.e. the Merrovingian.

Since Neo did not visit the source, this anti-Neo, Smith, is on the loose and wreaking havoc, which will lead to the system crash unless Neo stops him.
