Now you're approaching the heart of what I believe is at the core of the Matrix movies. If you're interesting in knowing more about the 300 year old philosophical debate on Free Will, I urge you to check out:

He sums it up rather nicely, although you'll have to read some more entries to understand what determinism, liberalism, materialism and naturalism is, but if you want to understand what the matrix is, then this is a good place to start. Notice how the words "control and understanding", "cause and affect" are all over this text.

Once you've pondered that a bit, move on to this article from the official matrix website called "reflections on the first matrix":

It's heavier stuff, but also enlightening

For the really hardcore, I suggest you read this boy right here:

This one wont make much sense to you if you dont have a pretty good understanding of the Free Will problem.

Ah well, lets just throw in a couple of more sites about free will, they're not the best I've seen, but they might be easier to read:

I am convinced that this is what the movies are about. I just havent been able to figure out how yet :)
In any case, at this point I expect nothing less of the W. bros than to end this 300 year old philosophical debate and determine once and for all whether we possess free will or not :)
