Subject: Why were agents after the keymaker?

Why would the agents want to kill the keymaker? If the Architect wants Neo to come and see him, and the only way for Neo to get there is with the help of the keymaker, then why would the agents specifically target the keymaker (yes, I know he is an exile, but he IS needed by the Architect, right?)

I asked the question before: Who do the agents really work for? It occured to me that we all just assume that they work for the system, and thus for the Architect, but perhaps there are factions in the machine world vying for control over the Matrix. If the militant faction wants humans to die, they could sabotage the Architect's plan by killing the keymaker. Any thoughts?
