My theory runs that they can take objects into the 'real' world because its not the real world, its another level of the matrix. Think about it, how does neo stop the sentinels at the end, because h becomes aware that the 'real' world isn't real - note the line 'something feels different'. Also you'll note that the architect talks about neo being the fifth version of himself, and that basically he' a rpogram
