I don't know if you have a Barnes and Noble Bookstore near you, John, but I picked up a FANTASTIC book there, on the bargain aisle, called 'The Pleasures of the Torture Chamber', A History of Torture. There are a few instances in it of more ancient methods, such as some particularly nefarious devices used by Antiochus Epiphanes/Epimanes, but most of the chapters are Medieval/Renaissance in focus. The book itself is one of those written a century ago that they reprint, stick in a new binding, and sell for around $10.00 on the discount aisle. I don't know if you can find this book near you, or even if you have a B&N, but it really is a great resource. Goes from the 'obvious' methods such as the rack, iron maiden, and strappado, to some of the more obscure, such as various thumb and toe screws, and it's full of descriptions of torture from observers and executioners.

If you have a Barnes and Noble nearby, you might want to check it out, and ask for that book by name. It's a great value.
