I thought Martin's book Sounds and Society was a great book also. I told Garian that her next class should read this book first or maybe even second right after Goffman's - as Goffman's book is very focused on the dramaturgical point of view. Reading Goffman first and then Martin second would show us what strides and advancement has been made in the field of sociology of music. Martin does give us a better idea of the meaning of the sociology of music, how musical history can be studied from a sociolocial aspect, how thoughts and theories of different sociologists have been and can be continued to be applied to the sociolocial study of music. When I read Martin saying, "...such a perspective does not entail the idea that human beings are no more than puppets whose string are manipulated by the greater forces of society, or that as individuals we simply mirror the characteristics of our cultural context" (page 3), I felt like yelling great. I think many of us didn't like Goffman saying that people are "constantly" putting on performances - like we didn't have any control over our lives.
