I don't believe that Goffman is neccessarily stating that people are assuming roles in order to conform to a certain "norm." Although many roles are put on to set a certain known impression, I believe the roles' purpose are more for comfort from insecurity than conformity. Everyone seems to go about things in their own way, yet I wonder what it means to go "your own way." Don't we take after other people in order to form our own identity? If so, then what we are portraying is a piece of everyone else's identity. So, I then have to ask, why exactly are we putting on "fronts" for if we all share some piece of eachother?
