The Great White 2002 entry draft was held today and there seemed to be a lot of smiles on the faces of the GM’s as they left the building.
The biggest Winner of the day as expected going into the draft was Edmonton who possessed the first two picks and selected future Allstars Rick Nash and Jay Bouwmeester. The Eagles also picked up Denis Grebeshkov with the 7th overall pick, Niklas Kronwall, Milan Jurcina with the 48th and 49th and with the last pick of the draft maybe the best sleeper in Nils Ekman. Edmonton picked up some great talent and should remain a top team for yrs to come.
Victoria and Halifax also had strong drafts and both got together with the biggest trade of the day with Victoria picking up the 3rd overall pick and sending the Harpoons the 5th overall pick and the 19th overall pick. The Totems had 5 first round picks selected Kari Lehtonen with the 3rd pick and went on to draft Joffrey Lupul, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, John-Michael Liles and Christian Backman. Halifax picked up Mihael Ryder, Joni Pitkanen, Jiri Hudler, Alexander Semin, Tomas Fleischmann, Keith Ballard, Kirill Koltsov, Jim Slater, and Alexander Auld.
There was great talent taken right up to the end of the draft with Ray Emery, Antoine Vermette and Ekman closing out a busy day.
If a sleeper is defined as the biggest gamble made by a GM with the hopes of the biggest payoff down the road then the sleeper of this draft would have to be Whitehorse’s 54th overall pick in which they took a shot a the top scorer in the AHL this past season and a player who was originally drafted in 95 as a 17 yr old and originally never panned out but is now said to be next seasons Michael Ryder.
The Biggest loser of the day was of course London who failed to keep any picks for this deep draft and also failed to show up and try to pick up a last minute pick or two.
With a huge amount of talent left undrafted the 2003 draft looks to be as deep as this one so after a long day at the draft table its time to move onto the next phase of the offseason which well be to decide on your Free Agents and to chose a player to use your Franchise tag on.

good luck to all
