Rumors out of Yellowknife today swirl around stud defenseman Sergei Gonchar, who is rumoured to be on his way out of Yellowknife. Gonchar, currently a 77 overall, will see his rating skyrocket to 83 overall with the next set of rerates. So why on earth would he be available?

Speculation is that the Blades are slightly over the cap and are looking to get back under budget. Additionally, they have Scott Hannan coming up from the farm who is expected to make an immediate impact.

"We like Gonchar, and for his abilities, 4 million a year is very reasonable. However, this team has to drop a little salary and we feel losing Sergei may be the best option for the Blades at this time" commented GM Neil Hayes.

So what are the Blades looking for in return?

"The best package we can get" answered Hayes. We would like to acquire some draft picks, prospects, or younger players, but I wouldn't rule out any offer whatsoever.

Teams looking for a #1 dman should get on the phone to the Blades GM soon, before he regains consciousness.
