With the Saskatoon Silos having won just one of their preseason games, the club's GM, Ken McKenna, decided to make a move to bring in a talented veteran to help out with the many younger players on the roster.
Coming to the Silos is center Craig Conroy, a solid, two-way player with some offensive ability. To acquire Conroy, the club sent left wing Dean McAmmond to the B.C. Huskies along with an undisclosed amount of cash. The Huskies then moved McAmmond to the Whitehorse Warriors in exchange for center Vincent Damphousse.
McAmmond had been acquired to replace former team captain Martin Gelinas, but the club's depth at left wing made McAmmond expendable.
"Dean is a fine player, and will be an asset for the Warriors," commented McKenna. "We felt we needed some veteran help up the middle, though, with Dean being one of our more marketable players. We're happy to have a solid player like Conroy in our lineup, of course."
Although the Silos have played fairly respectably defensively this preseason, the offense has been moribund. This was not a surprise to anyone closely following the club, of course, given the youth in the lineup.
"We want the team to be competitive," assured the GM, "but I don't think it is realistic to think that we'll be a contender of any type this season. Our time is in the future, not now."
