Montreal, PQ - Blessed with a young and potent team, the future looks bright for the Montreal Marauders. However, the team has started the season slower than many had hoped, forcing management to question whether roster moves need to be considered.
The goalscoring has been consistent, with the top two lines producing well and the thrid and fourth lines contributing as well. The defense, however, has been spotty. Proud of the "No-Name" defense corps, GM Sean Gallagher has defended the unit publicly for it's depth and mobility, but insiders suggest that he may be looking for a defensive 'stopper'.
"He'd love to get a physical, intense blueliner who can anchor the defense and play in penalty kill situations," said the source.
It's believed that Paul Kariya is the main bait, as well as two or three other blueliners who would be displaced by a trade.
"There are teams that can afford [Kariya]," said the source, "especially now that probably 20-25% of his salary will be paid by the time a deal can be struck. There are planty of teams that have a need for a proven left winger who can score."
The Marauders have set an early-season pattern of strength away from home and futility in the Montreal building. Their 1-3 record at home has kept the fans away, though the team expects that a couple well-timed wins could turn that around.
"The fans need us to prove something to them," said leading goalscorer Mark Parrish, "we can't blame them. We need to win in our building and bring them back in."
Montreal plays in Toronto Monday night.
