Subject: Silos Stumble Into Season's Second Half

The Saskatoon Silos were riding high in the GWHL's Western Conference standings for much of the 2005 season's first half. But a recent losing skein has dropped the club out of a playoff position at the season's halfway mark, causing a bit of anxiety on the plains.

The effort is still there, of course, with the Silos outshooting opponents in some of their losses. But the goals have been hard to come by, which is a weakness that was pretty much anticipated for this year's club.

Two other factors contributing to the hard times are the injury to impressive rookie Alexander Frolov and the suspension of tough winger Mike Leclerc. Frolov is a Rookie of the Year candidate who was injured in a 4-2 loss at the hands of the B.C. Huskies. He'll likely miss at least two more games before returning to the lineup. Leclerc, meanwhile, has been an unsung player for the club, contributing goals and toughness while playing on the Silos first unit. This is his second suspension this season, however, with his absence being quite evident in the won-lost column.

Still, the team is only two points out of a playoff spot, so no one inside the club is openly expressing concern over the bad turn to the season.

"I really can't ask for more than I've gotten from this club," said Silos coach Bob Hartley. "The effort is there most nights, but the inability to generate scoring chances is a problem we can't always overcome. I think that it is great that our younger guys are in the middle of a heated playoff race, though."

The team is not expected to make any significant moves for the time being, but GM Ken McKenna has indicated he'll re-assess things as the trade deadline gets closer.

"We're still a club for the future," said the GM, "but a trip to the playoffs would be a great thing for the guys. If a deal is available that can help the club without hurting our future, then it might be something worth considering. But w'll see where we stand later on."
