The Saskatoon Silos continued their off-season remake by trading veteran defenseman Alexander Karpovtsev to the Charlottetown Islanders. In return, the Silos receive versatile winger Jochen Hecht from the Islanders.

The 32-year-old Karpovtsev was penciled in by the Silos' coaching staff as the team's #6 or 7 defenseman. But, with the drafting of defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist, the team apparently felt that the Russian defender was a tradeable asset.

"Alex will be a solid acquisition for the Islanders," said GM Ken McKenna. "We felt we had enough depth to allow us to make this deal, though. Jochen is a strong, young player who can play either wing, so we think he can grow into a role on our club."

The move continued the team's focus on adding younger talent. In addition to Tjarnqvist and Hecht, younger players like Niklas Hagman, Vladimir Orszagh, Nolan Pratt and Ivan Novoseltsev are expected to make a run at roster spots in training camp.

The Silos also announced that they have come to terms on a 3-year deal for Head Coach Bob Hartley. Hartley was happy to remain with the club, a move that wasn't unexpected given the strong season that the team just completed.

"Coaching this team will be more of a challenge this coming season," stated Hartley. "I like some of the moves that have been made to solidify the team for the future, but it may take time to get the team playing at the high level that we performed at last season. I look forward to the challenge."
