Montreal, Quebec - Bolstered by a decent, if streaky, start to the season, Montreal GM decided the time had come to switch gears.
"I've been preaching patience since I came here a year ago," said Gallagher, "the team was young and needed time to develop. But the chance is there to compete. We've beaten some talented clubs like Halifax, for instance.
"I felt like there were some opportunities out there, and testing the waters, I found some interesting options."
The Marauders have traded Jeff Friesen, Stephen Weiss and Jocelyn Thibeault to Charletown for Brendan Shanahan, Matthias Norstrom and Felix Potvin.
"I hated to lose those three players, especially a guy as young and talented as Weiss, but we needed grit up front, better defense and a goaltender who can steal some games. We got what I wanted," said Gallagher.
But more deals are in the offing, according to the brass. For one, Martin Biron came up from the minors to back up Potvin. Clearly, Manny Fernandez is packing his bags.
"Manny is a solid netminder and will have some good days in this league. However, Biron has earned a chance to play in the GWHL. We traded Mr Fernandez to Winnipeg for John Grahame just yesterday. Grahame will report to our farm team for this year, but we expect to see him in the GWHL at some point in the near future."
Gallagher insists he is not done yet.
"We've had some discussions with other teams and some deals are out there. We'll see what happens."
