Montreal - After taking the helm last year mid-season, Montreal Marauders GM Sean Gallagher set forth an official rebuilding plan. A little over one season later and the plan has been exploded.

"We played a little more competetively this year than I anticipated," said Gallagher, "since we have a shot at the playoffs now, we decided to try to put our best effort into it. We've made several trades over the year to bolster our lineup, but nothing compares to the recent activity in terms of volume."

Gallagher has brought in various talents like Brendan Shanahan, Todd Bertuzzi, Adam Oates, Patrick Marleau and Danny Markov over the last few months.

In the last 24 hours however, he pulled three quick trades that saw a major change in the composition of the lineup.

The deals saw the Marauders add big names in Paul Kariya, Steve Sullivan, and Evgeni Nabokov. In addition, the defense added solid two way players in Frank Kaberle and Pascal Trepanier and role players Vitali Yachmenev and Greg Johnson.

Montreal gave up plenty of youth in return. Gone are fan favorite Adam Deadmarsh, struggling but talented Felix Potvin and several young prospects like Mike Ribeiro and Dmitri Kalinin.

"We knew we'd have to give up some good players to make these trades go," said Gallagher, "but we managed to keep the core group of youngsters that we have in our pipeline. You hate to tell a good young guy he's traded, but it's part of the business."

The Marauders will test out the new-look lines tomorrow at home against a tough BC squad.

"We're still trying to land a playoff spot," said Gallagher, "so every point is important. You just have to hope that the new guys gel quickly."

With the trade deadline looming, Gallagher would not comment on any other pending trades.

"We're always looking to improve the team. If something comes up, we'll seriously consider any offer."
