[Saskatoon, Sas.] Saskatoon Silos' GM Ken McKenna kept the Saskatoon media busy at the 2005 GWHL Draft. He also managed to get the assembled multitude to scratch their heads in unison with the second of the Silos' two first round selections.

Prior to the Draft, the Silos moved their 2009 first round selection and one of their 2007 third round selections to the Victoria Totems. In return, the Silos received defenseman Henrik Tallinder and the second pick of 2005 Draft's second round.

With their first pick of the Draft, the Silos selected smooth-skating defenseman Steve Eminger. McKenna and his scouts like Eminger's offensive potential quite a bit.

"Steve is a defenseman in the mold of a Paul Coffey, although I am not comparing him to Coffey," enthused the GM. "We see him as a future power play QB for the Silos, but he also has the smarts to be effective in his own end."

The Silos then made the selection that had draft attendees, as well as many GMs, saying "Who?" when they chose Swedish right winger Magnus Kahnberg. Kahnberg has good size as well as some offensive ability.

"Yes," chuckled the GM, "I figured the selction of Khanberg would create a stir. But we like him a lot- he made great progress in Sweden this year, and we think he is close to being ready to come to North America."

In the second round, the Silos chose a familiar name. Russian right winger and former Silos prospect Pavel Vorobiev went back into the GWHL Draft, but the Silos decided that they liked the energetic winger too much to let him get away.

"With Pavel going back into the Draft, our depth at right wing took a hit," said McKenna. "So we figured, why not just bring him back?"

To round out their draft, the Silos selected in the third round defenseman Doug Lynch and left winger Eric Nystrom. Lynch is a solid, all-around defenseman with some toughness, while Nystrom is a big winger with power forward potential.

Silo Siftings: McKenna is expected to sign four prospects, including defensemen Barrett Jackman and the newly-acquired Tallinder, plus goaltender Ryan Miller and winger Alexander Frolov. Said the GM, "The fans need to see some signs that the new blood is on the way sooner rather than later, so these guys are the first batch."
