Victoria had a very busy day at the 2005 GWHL draft, making a couple of deal and making five selections.
With an almost capacity roster and seven draft picks, it was expected that Victoria would attempt to clear some roster space, and perhaps make an effort to trade up in the draft.
The first deal of the day came about an hour before the draft began, and helped to clear some space for the players that were to be drafted.
In the deal, the Totems sent 2004 draft Henrik Tallinder, and the 20th pick of this years draft, to the Saskatoon Silos for the Silo's 1st pick in the 2009 draft and Whitehorse's 3rd round pick in the 2007 draft.
"This deal accomplished what we hoped it would," Totem GM Shawn Macdonald was quoted as saying, "We managed to secure our future a bit by stockpiling some picks, and cleared some space for the players were drafted today."
The second deal came out of nowhere early in the first round, when the Halifax Harpoons called a timeout before the third pick overall. Harpoon GM Stephen Holodinsky was seen conferring with Shawm Macdonald for a few minutes of heated discussion. When they emerged from their huddle, the Totems had picked up the 3rd pick overall in exchange for the 5th overall and the 19th.
With that pick the Totems then announced that they had selected Finnish goaltender Kari Lehtonen. "We've had our eyes on Kari for quite some time now," said Macdonald, "and although the price was steep, it was one we felt was worth paying. With Giggy in the nets for now and Kari having time to be groomed in the minors, we're pretty confident with out depth at a crucial position for years to come."
Next up Victoria picked Joffrey Lupul with the 6th pick overall. They followed that pick 5 picks later when they took defenceman John Michael Liles and forward Pierre Marc Bouchard back to back. Their draft day ended with the 16th pick of the day, where they chose another blueliner, Swedish defenceman Christian Backman.
All in all, it was a busy day for Victoria. Whether it will turn out to be a fruiful one as well will be seen several years down the road.
