(HALIFAX)-"It's about time" commented Halifax Captain Rob Blake. He was dead on. After watching the team sleepwalk through their previous four games, losing three of those, the Navy and Tan came out skating when they faced the Winnipeg Wolves at the Aquadome tonight. "It took a bit of soul-searching and a lot of hard work but we got the 'W'," he added. Indeed hard work was the order of the day. The tone was set when Joe Thornton, playing between Zigmund Palffy and Jeff O'Neill for this one, hammered Keith Tkachuk along the sideboards in the first minute. Tkachuk, momentarily dazed, wobbled to the bench though he did return for his next shift.

From there the physical play by the homeside just kept coming as they outhit Winnipeg 28 to 12 on the night. Bobby Holik got things start for Winnipeg at the 8:08 mark of the first when he tipped a Jere Lehtinen shot past Mike Richter. However Halifax answered back 21 seconds later when Palffy took a Brian Leetch pass and rifled a shot past Manny Fernandez to tie it up. Leetch would score himself later in the first and Peter Bondra and Daniel Alfredsson would tally in the second to make the score 3-2 Halifax heading into the third.

That's when the wheels fell off for Winnipeg. Five straight goals by the Harpoons decided this game in favour of the home town boys. First it was Leetch again at 3:17 with a screen shot that eluded Fernandez. Then came Jeff O'Neill with two goals in a row, both on rebounds from close in as the Winnipeg defense completely lost control of the slot. Keith Carney's soft floater would squirm by Robert Esche at 10:12 of the third and Eric Lindros would power around the corner and stick the puck upstairs at 11:42 to close out the scoring.

"We really needed to get one of these," explained Ron Francis afterwards. "People were starting to doubt themselves."

"We're not out of the woods yet," volunteered Mark Messier. "We've got another game tomorrow against a hungry Montreal team, we've got to be ready for them."
