Another season of missing the playoffs after being considered favourites has cost a few Blades players their jobs on the team. Yesterday, Yellowknife GM Neil Hayes announced he had dealt away Derian Hatcher to Saskatoon in a salary dump for minor leaguers Lubos Bartecko and promising prospect Filip Novak. The hit was yet to come.

Today, franchise player Jaromir Jagr was dealt to Quebec along with young defenseman Wade Redden and winger Jeff Halpern. Coming to Yellowknife in return was superstar Mike Modano and bruiser defenseman Mike Rathje.

Hayes conceded that he gave up alot. "This trade could come back to haunt me. But I believe it helps this team for the present for both winning and the financial side." Jagr had reportedly had a few feuds with players and management and had become a slight cancer in the dressing room.
"Modano has great skills and has proven leadership. We are confident Modano can lead this team into the playoffs. We also saved a couple million in payroll and we think we have made strides for becoming a contender next season. We wish Jagr luck on his new team."
This coupled with the shedding Derrian Hatcher's 4 million dollar salary should give the Blades the ability to resign players such as Radek Bonk and give the team the ability to sign some FA's.
