The Saskatoon Silos are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games and playing their best hockey of the season, so one would think that this would be an odd time for the team to make a deal.
Nevertheless, "Trader McK" has struck again, with the Saskatoon GM completing a deal with the Steeltown Hammers. Moving over to the Steel City is defenseman Eric Desjardins, one of the better offensive defensemen in the GWHL. Coming back to Saskatoon is right wing Ivan Novoseltsev, plus two third round draft picks ('04 & '07).
The move is obviously one meant to secure the future for the Silos, but it will no doubt leave some fans scratching their heads. The team is currently in the middle of a battle for a playoff position, so moving a quality player like Desjardins might seem foolhardy. Silos GM Ken McKenna doesn't necessarily see it that way, though.
"Eric played well during his time here", said the GM, "but his main value to the team was on the power play. Our power play has struggled badly this season, however, and, although that isn't necessarily Eric's fault, we felt that this deal was one we couldn't pass up."
The signing of veteran defenseman Phil Housley may also have had something to do with the trade of Desjardins, with the Silos perhaps looking for a different mix of players on the power play unit.
In Novoseltsev, Saskatoon acquires a promising, though mostly unproven, player who may develop into a top 6 forward for the Silos. For now, though, he'll be ticketed for the farm club in Prince Albert. The two added draft picks give the Silos three picks in both the '04 and '07 drafts, so the team is replenishing some of the picks that have been traded over the past couple of seasons.
