Subject: Change in the air in Saskatoon

Now that the sting of their disappointing playoff loss has started to fade, the Saskatoon Silos' organization has turned its attention to the future. Specifically, GM Ken McKenna is taking a long, hard look at the makeup of his club, with rumors of change swirling around the club.

With the exception of a handful of acquisitions prior to and during the season, the lineup that came within a win of a second round playoff berth was the same one that the GM inherited from the previous ownership and management group. While the GM expressed admiration for the players' efforts during the season and playoffs, there was always a sense that the Saskatoon hockey braintrust was never quite satisfied with the on-ice product. For his part, McKenna is doing little to make observers think otherwise.

"I thought the acquisitions of (Alexei) Yashin, (Eric) Desjardins and (Dallas) Drake were a definite plus for this club" stated McKenna. "I don't think we would have made the playoffs without them. We tried to make other deals up to the trade deadline, but the dynamics for making a deal that would have made this club a Hoser Cup contender simply weren't there."

With the off-season now here, however, the Silos' GM is rumored to have been busy making some deals that couldn't be made during the season. "I think teams tend to look at things a little differently after the season, when you can truly gauge the strengths and weaknesses of your club" said McKenna. "With free agency and the entry draft on the horizon, GMs tend to look at their teams a little differently than when they are in the middle of a playoff race."

The Silos are said to be seeking some youth, as well as some veteran offensive and defensive help. "With free agency and the draft, as well as a couple trades, I think we can accomplish some of the things we'd like to do- not everything, but a few things." Is it true that the team has already completed a couple deals? "No comment" winked the GM.
