London, ON - Having to sit out his first two games as a Marauder was frustrating to newly-acquired Peter Forsberg, but his first game back was meaningful. Forsberg faced off against his former mates, the London Lasers, who traded him earlier this year after a slow start. On top of that, a Montreal win would put the Marauders in a points-tie with the Lasers, who currently hold the final playoff position.
Forsberg didn't wait too long, as he earned primary assists on two goals in the first period. He set up Captain Dave Andreychuk for a bang-in near the crease and then set up Ilya Kovalchuk for a one-timer just two minutes later. Forsberg capped his night with a third assist in the third period, as Kovalchuk netted the back-breaker to make the score 6-2.
London battled back for two more goals, but the rally started too late.
"That's a good team, obviously," said Forsberg, "and I had plenty of reasons to want to have a good game. Now we need to put together a run and get into the playoffs."
That attitude is one of the main reasons that GM Sean Gallagher brought Forsberg in earlier this week.
"That's exactly what I expect from him. He's a game-breaker. He played fewer than 15 minutes and had three points. Plus, his attitude is right. I'm excited."
Doing his part to prove that the trade was worthwhile, Rod Brind'Amour, the most forgotten part of the deal also tallied an assist in the first period. Brind'Amour set up low-scoring Vitaly Yachmenev for the third Montreal goal of the first period.
The Marauders continue their roadie with a visit to Divisional rival Charlettetown tomorrow before heading home to face powerful Calgary.
