The database is the most important feature of PDFE.

First, you can not compare the slow speed of the direct scan mode Disktree and the light speed of indirect scan modes DBDiskTree and DBDisk.

Without it we can not have the DBSearch scan mode, only the most important search functionality of PDFE.

Without it we can not find files present in removable media, like CD-ROM's. We can index all our collection of PDFs present in many CD(DVD)-ROMS, or any other removable media, and latter use the indirect scan mode to find them. When we want to access to these files PDFE ask for the correct disk.

Also, with the database, we can add meaningful metadata to these pdf's present on read only media. It is physical impossible to edit these files so we can not add\change the original metadata on them.
With that meaningful metadata present in the database we can find these, previously anonymous, files very easily using the DBSearch scan mode.

Take a look to the User's guide to get the general back bone idea of PDF Explorer. The English version is very limited because my English is very poor and I need someone to make the translation of the already available full guides in other languages.

By the way, you can easily force the metadata update on these files using the UpdateDocumentInfoFields batch tool.
