If NZL women were unseeded, as the men are, the women could very easily have ended up in Group A with Germany and Australia. Wouldn't that fill you with joy before they even leave home. Petition for a change to the unfair system.
--------o0o------
We believe that the Canoe Polo World Championships should represent the very best in Canoe Polo competition, with the best teams standing on the podium at the end of the competition. To achieve this a better seeding system is needed, to avoid some of the best teams being unfairly eliminated through unfair groupings in the first round of competition.
We urge that the ICF Canoe Polo committee must take early action to ensure a fairer, more acceptable seeding system is used in 2004.
The current seeding system is unfair, is not known to be used elsewhere in world sport, and is a disgrace to canoe polo. It must be rectified before teams are chosen for participation in the World Games in 1995, to ensure the proven best 6 teams compete, not the best few and a lucky few. (Unless a regional representation is decided upon) That is, it must be changed for the 2004 World Championships.
------------- Example of Current Unfair system ----------------
The current seeding system, as seen in the 2002 World Championships Women’s competition, sees group A holding 3 of the best performed women’s teams in the world today (Germany, Australia, Netherlands), but only 2 can proceed to the second round. But at the same time, Group D does not have any teams proven to be of this standard, but will also send 2 teams to the second round. (That Japan finished 4th in Brazil 2000, notionally above 5th placed Australia, was already largely a result of the strangeness of the seeding and draw system used then)
It is not fair to put the 1st and 5th seeded teams into one group, while another group has only the 4th and 8th seeds. Rather, Group A should have seeds 1 and 8, Group B should have seeds 2 and 7, Group C should have seeds 3 and 6, Group D should have seeds 4 and 5.
This problem is further compounded when the results from one World Championships are used to seed the teams for the next World Championships. Thus, one of these top teams in Group A could be relegated to finishing in 9th place at best this year, simply by being defeated by two of the very top teams. They will then be able to achieve only a seeding of 9th at best going into the next World Championships, increasing the chances of the same problem or worse occurring again in 2 years time. Compounding more in each successive championship.
The same problem exists in the Men’s competition, but is not so apparent as there are more groups.
