is your welder a stick, ac or dc? or a mig? On stick, e6013
rod 1/16"or 5/64" mild steel, burns easy on thin sheet meatal, like 16ga, but on 18 ga. you should use a back-up strip, of copper to keep from burning through, 20-40amps.
Do short beads 3/4 in long and skip weld or keep a wet rag, to cool the thin metal. but use a body hammer and dolly to flatten the metal before you cool it, so it doesn't warp, or clamp the metal so it won't move under heat. On a mig, use .023 wire, w/75/25=argon/co2 mix.30-50amp. flux core wire does't work as good on thin metal.
