7018 is about the best rod to use on mild steel. if i were to weld 1/4 inch mild steel, i'd probably use 1/8 electrodes. if i were in a tight conrer i'd use 3/32 for the root, for expample the side of a pipe being welder to a plate o|. the slag would be difficult to chip, but after i got most of it out i'd go over it with a hot pass with 1/8 electrode. hope that helps,
