If anyone hasn't heard yet, yesterday at Latus Motors (the Harley Davidson shop in Gladstone right off i-205) in honor of Presidents' Day, they found their great big, beautiful flag cut to pieces. All that's left of Mr. Latus' $5,000 flag are the stars.

This really saddens me because I loved that flag. Last year I drove by it every day on my way to CCC, and every time I saw it I couldn't help but smile--it was the biggest, most beautiful display of pride and hope in the goodness of our nation I've ever seen. Even in crappy weather and on bad days it caught air magnificently and its simple presence inspired hope.

This hurts not just Mr. Latus, but the community in Gladstone as well as all the people driving by on the freeway. It was not a political symbol but one of faith and hope; the American flag does not represent our President but our people. That it was used to make a political statement is disgusting and completely undermines efforts toward unity. Our belief in our country is what makes it great; at least in this we should be unified. If we can't all agree on religion, rights, and politics, if we can't all respect our leaders, we should at least be able to respect our country. If not, leave.
