I believe that traditional sex roles negatively contribute to a truly free personality. The idea of a truly free personality could be characterized as what we traditionally think of as one's persona or mannerisms. I suppose that a truly free personality is one that is unhampered by social norms or boundaries. From early on boys are taught to play with Tonka trucks and girls are taught to play with Barbie dolls. I believe that this is okay if they naturally gravitate towards playing with the respective toys. However, if the girl venture towards the truck and likewise the boy plays with the doll they should not be punished. For example, my baby cousins were playing around on the living room floor at my grandmother's house. Michael, the baby boy, was playing with Rachel's toy doll when my grandmother caught sight of it she yelled at Michael exclaiming "little boys don't play with dolls, go grab your toy car!" When Michael began to cry for the doll my grandmother popped his hand said "No!" while pointing at the doll and placed his car into his hand. This is an example of how early on we are socialized to be either masculine or feminine oriented through our parents or other family members. I maintain that I boy playing with a doll will not make him more feminine just as a girl playing with a toy car will not make her masculine. In that way, when society tries to define what is masculine or feminine I believe creativity at all levels is the price we pay. Creativity is important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It allows individuals to express their desires, problems, fears, and other elements of their being through sometimes artistic, poetic, musical and many other uniquely expressive ways. Therefore, when you come across someone, albeit a parent, a stranger, or other loved one that tries pressing upon you a trait contrary to whom you feel that you are; do not hesitate to stay "thank you, but I am Okay with me!"
