I mean, he could just go and commit seppuku (or whatever other form of suicide) whenever he wants, except that he's too weak--mentally, spiritually, and whatever else--to do so. That's why he got drawn into that obsessive love/hate realtionship with Seishirou in the first place. He hated Seishirou, but couldn't let him go. He loved Hokuto, and couldn't let her go either. So it only makes sense that he can't let himself go. That just seems to be his place in life: the "suffering saint" and all.
