Hello, I work with plants and gardens. It's always difficult to suggest something without seeing the garden and knowing how the family will use it.

Generally I find it good to add groups of plants of various heights. If the garden is large you should try dividing it into 2-3 sections. Like one area for games, one for patio/eating etc, one for a vegetable/fruit garden, etc. Discuss with your folks what interests can benefit from the outdoors? A pool is also nice, but never use more than 25% of the lawn for water fascilities. Paths through the garden is always nice.

Pay attention to your entrance! It's the part of your garden you will frequent the most. It's worthy of some good planning and lots of plants.

Use many colours, but try to stick with a certain sheme, like choosing 2 or 3 main colours.

Keep the number of flowers down, they need most tending. Shrubs are okay, they will survive even if they arew not frequently trimmed. Small trees cause less work, except they will mess up the lawn in Autumn.

Good luck!
