really struggling to get onto any websites now so here's a message in case I don't get onto email. ANdy sorry the phone died when I tried ringing, we rarely get a good line out here.
Still nice and hot here, 35 degrees and sooooo humid. Went to the national park in the jungle last week, made friends with about 50 leeches and hundreds of cuts off razor grass (one across my eye which hurt a bit), so feet and arms are now completely buggered. They look like a war zone, lots of lumps and cuts all over. Plus every time I go to the loo (outside) my arse gets kissed by mosquitos which is annoying. Had some Maoists visit the village followed a day later by an army visit and full village search by pissed off armed soldiers hoping to find a Maoist or two stashed away....other stuff too which I will wait till I get home to tell you in person, too long and complicated to tell here when the power may go at any minute. Arms are brown, legs are white, caught Giardia which gives you dodgy stomach for a while then goes and reappears a few weeks later, so could still be suffering when I return to civilisation.
On the positive side, we had a bengal tiger and rhino fighting near our village the other night so my chances of meeting the local wildlife are getting better by the day - now's when they cross the river and come over to say hi. Seen loads of elephants and some snakes, plus hundreds of birds and butterflies (465 different birds in national park). Scenery is still spectacular, orange/red/pink/purple/turqoise/blue sunsets every night lighting up the Himals in the distance. The kids I'm teaching are fantastic, I get up at 5am every morning and am still not sick of dal bhaat, my nepali is improving, I've met so many people and seen so many different hindu/buddhist festivals, my head has been tikka-ed so many times I may have a permanent red stain on my forehead. From next Saturday we have Tihar, when the goddess of wealth visits the homes, then I go to Kathmandu to renew my visa, followed by a rafting trip on the Bhote Kosi in the Himals, class 4/5 rapids which are apparently quite nasty :-/
Then a couple more weeks teaching, followed by some trekking im the mountains - I was going to do some of the Annapurna circuit but the Maoists took it over last week and charge huge fees to pass their checkpoints, so maybe I'll do the Annapurna Base Camp trek instead - colder but cheaper! Or I might go to the east and go trekking near the border with TIbet. EIther way it will be a good way to end the trip, then I head back to stay in London over CHristmas. SO Andy, now you read this, can you maybe turn my phone on and text my mum/dad/sister to say i am ok but no email at the moment? thanks vvvv much. Hope everyone is ok, hope Indus is still afloat, hope Bristol is good anyone who's now living there, see you all around Christmas maybe.
