Subject: How is satalite ?
In reply to: Jeannie (forum admin) 's message, "ISP" on 15:53:31 09/24/04 Fri

How is the internet on satalite? Is it expensive ?

I don't have it at home because everyone I speak to tells me that the dialup in really really slow in our neck of the woods (Nestleton).

Luckly I am free to use it for anything I want at work, but it would be nice to have at home.

[> [> [> Satellite & Speed -- Jeannie (forum admin), 12:48:32 09/27/04 Mon

Hi Toby,

I live on Scugog Island, where the max. speed for a modem is 34kbs (if you're lucky). Even Bell admit the lines here are so old that we'll never really achieve a clean data line! (No DSL available here, apparently too expensive for any company to upgrade our old cabling.)

So we went satellite. Not the Bell dialup thing. The full Lincsat (Direcway) route.

The speed is nothing compared to Bell's DSL (High Speed), but it is considerably faster than dialup.

But I guess if I upgraded my pc (a 1.2mhz dinasaur) it would be faster.

If you are interested in satellite, I can highly recommend you to Skyview, in Brooklin. I didn't buy mine from Skyview (won't recommend my purchase company, as they really didn't know very much about the product), but have been dealing with them over the last few months and have been very impressed with their knowledge and turn-around time for issues.

If you want to know anything else, just shout!

Take care,
Jeannie

[> [> [> [> Wireless Internet -- Bryan, 20:20:37 11/30/04 Tue

Does anyone use a wireless internet provider? Wireless is superior to cable, dsl and definately satelite! There is a provider called candlelight (www.candlelight.ca) They provide a bi driectrional 5mbps signal. Currently they have service in most of cottage country including Muskoka. The have a new tower proposed that broadcasts from Grass Hill Ontario. The proposed service is outlined on their website and all of port perry including the island is in the proposed coverage area.

If Anyone can suggest a similar service I would greatly aprreciate it. I am moving to the island in a few weeks and dread the thought of a slow internet connection.

I understand that most of the area has excellent coverage through Compton communications but the Island is served by this dreadful outfit called Persona.

If you have any suggestions please reply

Thanks

[> [> [> [> [> No high speed internet on the Island -- Jeannie (forum admin), 13:06:24 12/15/04 Wed

I have bad news for you, Bryan, Persona don't have internet service and don't plan on it (see * below) anytime in the future. Even the tv signal is bad.

The telephone line can only manage 33kbs maximum and that, most of the time, is dirty (noise interrupting the signals).

The only alternative serious web users have turned to is Lincsat satellite (recently taken over by another company), who is the Canadian representative of US Direcway.

The speed is so-so, but at least faster than dialup (as long as you have a fast pc/laptop).

The other option would be Bell satellite. Only you still lose the use of your telephone, as you have to have a phone line to send the internet request (page), even though you receive the request (page) down via their satellite.

* I have been in extensive communication with the CRTC, due to the Canadian Government's mandate to have all Canada - regardless of location - with the ability to access the internet via broadband.

It seems that, although this mandate is strong, it doesn't apply to Persona and Scugog Island. Where a company [Persona] have to invest more than a certain $ amount (they wouldn't disclose that figure), then the company [Persona] don't have to invest in upgrades to cabling or adding servers.

This also affects the supply of digital tv. If you are a Persona customer, you won't get it.

I am exceedingly annoyed by this as Persona, who purchase tv and internet services from small, outlying communities right across Canada, knew what they were buying when they purchased the rights to Scugog Island from Hometown, and actually sent out a note to all Island residents advising that internet services were on their way.....

I even went as far as contacting the Persona executive, eventually communicating with the then Marketing Director, who also advised that internet and digital tv were coming. He was subsequently let go shortly after.....

If anyone has any further information on what Persona's plans, if any, for upgrading the dire cabling on the Island, please let us know!

[> [> [> [> [> No wireless -- Jeannie, 09:43:17 05/28/06 Sun

Raymond,

There is no wireless available on the Island.
No-one wants to spend the time or money to hook us up.

I have been in extensive contact (over the last 4 years) with:
- Bell - no interest/plans in upgrading our wiring/cabling
(for phones or broadband)
- Persona - broadband - no interest
- Cogeco - broadband - can't do anything as Persona have
the contract for the Island
- Wireless - spoke to a chap in Blackstock, who
hooked them up last year - but he isn't
interested in the Island
- Satellite - can get either Xplornet standard or
Xplornet KAband - both of which are slow,
unless you are prepared to pay HUGE for
more speed (= bandwidth)

If anyone knows differently, please post here, as there are 2000 all-season homes on the Island that could use decent internet services!

Jeannie
