The egg wobbled a little more as the scratching inside became more insistent. Then, obviously not finding scratching to be doing an adequate enough job, the egg trembled as a tiny head rammed itself against the shell. Small fault lines radiated from a central fissure that widened steadily. One little clawed finger appeared, it's scarlet scales glistening. It seemed to test the air to determine if it really wanted to come out after all. Evidently finding the cooler air to its liking, the creature doubled its efforts, the shell cracking apart under the onslaught. One large piece fell away to reveal a shining creature of fiery crimson and azure blue. Golden eyes blinked uncertainly in the sudden bright light as tiny paws clenched and unclenched. The little creature raised his head and stared up at the boundless skies. Suddenly not so quick to hatch, the baby recoiled back into its shell with a squeak of fright. Once there, he became disgusted with his cowardly attitude and forced himself to face this new stimulant. Cautiously, he poked his head out again, the sky still daunting in its immensity, too terrible to comprehend after being confined for so long in such a small space. Clenching his fists, the hatchling raised himself to his full height, which wasn't saying much at all. His ineffectual wings flared as he emitted a piercing roar of defiance at the broad expanse. Of course, it only sounded like a roar to him. In actuality, the sky quailed at the sound of a raspy squeak. Satisfied that he had thus shown his enemy who was boss, the hatchling clambered from the remains of his shell. One oversive hindpaw caught itself on a broken edge, sending the little monster tumbling. He rolled end over end until he slammed with a solid THUNK! into his mother's side. Hissing like a teakettle, he scrambled away from the vixen, his baleful eyes darting around in a panic.
The blue dragon chuckled softly at his first offspring, his tail reaching out to snare the little one. Ever so gently, he lifted the hatchling to eye level. "Aren't we the contrary one," he murmured, his low as to avoid overloading the baby's newly awakened senses.
The hatchling squirmed in his father's grasp, determined not to be bound by anything in this new world. His movements stopped immediately as he was lowered into the path of his mother's gaze. His golden eyes, much like the ones he was captivated by, widened in awe and recognition. This was what he had hatched for. He began to squirm again, desperate to explore this new finding. His father obliged him, setting him gently on his mother's paws. The hatchling stared up at her, his tiny talons lovingly scratching her crimson scales before returning to rest on his azure belly. Loosing a squeak of utter delight and contentment, he latched onto one digit, determined not to let her out of his sight.
Azriel uttered a small sound of adoration, his fluorescent gaze fixed on the little one. "How come everyone always likes you better?" he whispered to his mate. "But at least he has taste."
