Subject: Stereotyping

In class we discussed differences in how adolescence is perceived by society. Many people characterize adolescents as rebellious, depressed, and lazy. I think it may be problematic for our culture to stereotype adolescents so negatively because it may be contributing to the difficulties that people in this age group are facing. I read on the Psychology Today website that from 1980-1984, the population of people under the age of 18 declined but the amount of adolescents admitted into psychiatric hospitals increased by 450%. This may be because parents are viewing every problem that adolescents face as a disease. Also, the third highest cause of death among adolescents is suicide (American Psychologist). I agree with the idea that it may help if our society encourages more people in this age group to develop bonds with adults outside of their family, such as mentors
