I agree, I think service learning is a phenomenal model where students (of any age) can learn compassion and understanding. I think adolescence is a particularly important time for developing this. But service learning has other added bonuses in that adolescents can learn new skills and be exposed to a broad range of vocations. For instance, an adolescence who participates in a service learning project where they aid in a classroom of younger children may decide he or she wants to be a teacher. Or if they work in a program that helps to build houses they will gain skills of building and house maintenance. I think it is a win-win situation!
