Subject: QUAKE HITS PHILIPPINE WATERS

Quake hits Philippine waters

The Philippine Star 09/02/2003

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 on the Richter scale struck the western coast of northern Philippines at exactly 8:43 p.m. on Sunday night but there were no reports of injuries or damage, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The earthquake was centered in the South China Sea, about 180 kilometers southwest of Manila, and was felt at Intensity 3 in Puerto Galera, Mindoro Oriental. It was not, however, felt in nearby land areas in Olongapo, Pampanga and Iba, Zambales.

According to Phivolcs, the tremor was not expected to cause damage or be followed by strong aftershocks.

It said the undersea temblor was set off by movement in the Manila Trench, an underground area off the western coast of northern Philippines where continental plates meet.

"The Manila Trench is where the Eurasian Plate dives under or subducts beneath the western part of offshore Luzon. It starts from off shore of northern Philippines to down south off shore of Mindoro island. A significant number of earthquakes experienced in Luzon originated from the Manila Trench," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told The STAR.

The Hong Kong observatory reported a magnitude of 5.3 for the same earthquake. Phivolcs officials said there are different measurements because different machines and formula are used in detecting and measuring the earthquake’s strength.

The Philippines is located along the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. — AP, AFP, Felix de los Santos
