Subject: It's all over but the shouting in Red Sox nation

Okay, maybe you hadn't noticed, but the Red Sox won the World Series. As usual we had a big parade (it was great - Papelbon did his dance and rode on a float with the Dropkick Murphys (who may get honorary World Series rings)). Of course, after they beat Cleveland there was the usual rioting and carrying on by rowdy inebriated students. Several of them were cuffed and incarcerated and had to appear in court before Judge Redd (is that a coincidence or what?). The judge made them all write 5-page essays about their arrests.

The Boston Globe describes the results as a "torrent of soul-searching, guilt purple prose". One of them lamented that "running down to Fenway Park in a craze is only asking for one thing and that is trouble."

Another wrote: "I let my mother and father down by not living up to my reputation as a well-rounded college student, and making our last name, White, subtly infamous. My mother cried for days after she heard the news." [I wonder if he'll have to change his name to "Black" now and what the hell does "subtly infamous" mean? Good thing his name wasn't Smith. He'd have a lot of people to answer to, including us.] His essay was titled "Farewell Fenway," although he did maintain that "a diehard Red Sox fan is what I am; this situation will not change that..."

Another wrote that he was arrested after chanting that he had a right to walk on the street. "I was angry about the government. I tried to be radical. It didn't work out for me." His father was outside the courtroom and said his essay was very humble and insightful, and "I'm very proud of him." Maybe he can say something comforting to young Master White's mother.

Hopefully the judge won't throw the book (or the essays) at them...

So let this be a lesson to all the young people out there (we really don't have that many in the family anymore, do we? Alex, Jacob and Sarah this means you, I guess)...
