1ST AIR TRANSPORT COMMAND, 13TH SQUADRON -- MRS. ROBERT McDONALD, 12:10:04 02/19/04 Thu
I am looking for anyone who served with this group, particularly during 1942 through Jan. 1943. My brother, Jack E. Williams, was a radio operator serving until he was missing in action on January 26, 1943, on a return flight from Yunnanyi, China to Upper Assam, India (Sookerating, India). I believe he went over on the USS Brazil, stopping over at Cape Town, South Africa sometime in 1942. Dolores McDonald

Search for CBI photos -- Gregg Millett, 15:51:05 12/29/04 Wed
Searching for photos
A group in Kunming, China, led by Mr. Jin Fei Bao, is planning a large exhibition commemorating the end of World War II. The exhibition is planned for May of 2005. It will be held in Green Lake Park in the center of Kunming and is expected to attract as many as one million visitors.
My contribution to the exhibition is the photographs taken by my father, Dr. Clinton Millett (U.S. Army, 172nd General Hospital). His colored photographs were taken in India/Burma/China during 1944/45. To learn more about his experience in WWII, and my connection with Kunming, go to www.GreggMillett.com.
Can you help me? I am trying to locate more photographs for this Kunming exhibition. They are especially interested in photographs of Yunnan and its surrounding areas, including photos of the Burma Road, Stilwell Road, Flyng Tigers, Hump Flying and any other images from this era.
I will greatly appreciate hearing from you,
Gregg Millett

Looking for info on Sgt . Mack Pittard Jr. of ATC -- Penny Pittard Maroldo, 16:49:02 11/30/05 Wed
My dad Mack Pittard Jr. served in the ATC in WW II, and was a flight engineer on the planes that flew the Hump. He never talked about his service, except to say that he "got to travel a lot"!
He finished up his training at 864 (or 564) Army Air Force Base Unit (AAF BU) in Homestead, Florida he trained as a C-54 Flight Engineer. By September, 1942, his 19th month since enlistment, Mack was a Tech. Sergeant Aerial Engineer 1750 with the 1503 Army Air Force Base Unit. (Possibly this is Pacific Division Air Transport Command Hq, West Coast Wg/1 Air Tpt Wg at Hamilton Field, San Rafael, Calif. that I found on he web, but do not know)
I am having a heck of a time trying to find out what unit he was stationed in when he flew in the C-B-I theater. I do know from discharge papers that he also saw action in the New Guinea campaign.
His memory is very poor, but before it got worse, he told me that after flight school n 1943 he was stationed with the Ferry Command for a while outside Detroit and flew planes to Scotland and England...then he was stationed in San Francisco and flew to Japan to pick up the American wounded and bring them home.
After that he remembers that he was transferred to a town in India transporting planes and equipment from there to Australia and the Philippines. He got to spend some time at bases near the coast of Australia and New Zealand. It was after that that he was assigned to fly the Hump. He remembers it as "being hijacked by some General". His Enlisted Record and Report of Separation Honorable Discharge states that he "made frequent trips to A.P.T. (Asiatic Pacific Theater) on foreign ferrying missions."
Mack says he can vividly remember his ATC flight group flying into Japan to pick up the American POWs and wounded in Japan and transport them back to the USA. Their plane was armed in case of fighting, but when they landed, the Japanese soldiers "met their plane and bowed down to us. Boy, were we surprised!" Dad and his buddies did not know that the Japanese had surrendered!
Now, with this information, do you know of any way that I can ascertain just what unit dad was in. He is far from recollecting now, and would not talk about it at all until a couple years ago. Now he is 87 and not well, and I want so much to fill in the blanks.
Any help that you can offer or direction that you could point me in would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much
Penny Pittard Maroldo

My father served in the CBI theatre from 1943 to 1946 with the 348th Airdrome Squardon; 4th Combat Cargo Group. He was cargo handler and towards the end of his tour, he served as base security. His last assignment was in Myitkyina?, Burma. His name is ENRIQUE LUCIO and he was a PFC. I do not see much information on the cargo handlers of his unit or many other Hispanic service members mentioned on this site who served proudly in the CBI. He remembers arriving on a C46 tail number #1230. If there is anyone out there who might have served with him or remembers his name or unit please contact me. I would very much like to find out more details. He talks about his service with fond memories.

rest and relaxation -- Brad Shope, 13:09:15 10/24/05 Mon
I have conducted a lot of research in India on jazz and ballroom music in India around WW II. I have spoken to many Indians in North India who were listening to jazz that mentioned attending small clubs that some Americans were attending as well. They spoke very highly of the Americans. I know that CBI was often particularly rough, but I would like to know if there is anyone who would be able to comment on some of the entertainment during the war, especially in India. I have a lot of respect for those who were in this theater, and so did many Indians. Any comments or help would be appreciated.

Don Lepley, Signal Corps radar in Burma -- Jean Lepley, 18:37:03 10/05/05 Wed
Wanted photo of glider used in Burma or information
on my husband, Don Lepley, platoon leader, glider-born radar unit, in CBI 1945 to April-46. Landings made in enemy territory to report camps and troop movement by radio to base so fighter planes could strafe. Most often crash-landed glider was burned; men returning on foot with Chin & Kachin scouts through occupied dense jungle. His mementoes were lost during hospitalizations for wounds, cerebral concussion, fungus infections and malaria, yellow & dengue fevers. Stationed at Camp Kanchapara. Walked & fought in Irawaddy River Valley near Mandalay. Received battlefield commission. He was at Imphal, Lalaghat, Karachi air fields, India, & LuLiang, China. He died in 2000; like many he did not talk about war or keep contact with others. I wish he could have seen these websites.
After surrender he worked in Publications, Calcutta.

B29 crash at Hankow, China -- William C. Jackson, 09:21:01 10/04/05 Tue
To Whom it May Concern:
I was a Troop Carrier pilot in the China-Burma-India Theater of WW2, flying the Hump and doing ground support missions, flying C-47s and C-46s.
Recently I was in China for the 60th celebration of the end of the war and was, at one point, in the Hankow-Wuhan area. A Mrs. Li of Wuhan contacted me and told me, via an interpreter, an interesting story and asked for help in obtaining information relating to the story.
Mrs. Li said that her father, a farmer, rescued a wounded American B-29 crew member (perhaps pilot) whose plane was shot down in a raid on Japanese positions in that area. I have very little specific information: the B-29 crashed on January 14, 1945 around 1:00 p.m. The pilot's name was Paxton (more not known) and Mrs. Li's father managed to slip him thru the Japanese lines and return him to Chungking (now Chongqing), to Gen. Chennault's HQ. Paxton, wounded, was sent home to the U.S. Mrs. Li's father was recognized and decorated by Gen. Chennault in 1948. Anna Chennault later (August '95?) contacted Mrs. Li's father and recognized his effort.
Mrs. Li said that the Japanese made great difficulties for the family when they suspected what had happened.
My interest is in helping Mrs. Li contact Mr. Paxton if he still survives. Anyone with any knowlege of this crash and/or Mr. Paxton please contact me by e-mail or the postal service.
Thanks so much,
William C. Jackson

Captain Edward G. Evans Jr -- Vyki (Evans) Sabo, 15:45:16 08/27/05 Sat
Like so many who fought in WWII, my dear father, Edward G. Evans, Jr., didn't say much about his experiences. Now that I'm older and he has passed (1978), I have a keen desire to know more about what he and the other brave men who served with him actually did. I believe he was a Special Services Officer in connection with the 4th Combat Cargo Group and was dropped behind enemy lines in Burma to gather information about enemy positions and movements. I'd like to be able to tell my son and grandson about him. If you have any information or know of someone who might have any, I would certainly appreciate it if you would contact me. I'm just starting my search.
From his sketchy military records: Edward G. Evans, Jr. (I think he was a captain when he was "in Burma") was in the "Hq Sec 4th C C Group" from Nov. 17, 1944 - Nov. 21, 1945. He was in Sylhet, India on Dec. 16, 1944. His CO was Lt. Col. Stuart D. Baird. He's listed as "Spec Serv O. - 5000" and the letters "USF-IBT" are listed with his three Bronze Service Stars.
A few other things I know: He flew over "the Hump" "several times". He was a non-drinker/non-smoker who always traded his booze and cigarettes for chocolate bars! He probably talked about my mother and sister a lot. And he may have read Shakespeare from a teeny weeny set of his works that he might have brought with him! I was born in 1946, but I remember him getting together with a "war buddy" whose name, I think, was Jack Spilka (wife Rita). Jack died when I was very young of an untreatable parasitic tropical disease that he got while "in Burma". My dad also had a scar under his ribs on the left side that I think my mother said was from a Japanese bayonet.
I don't know if any of this information is going to help identify him to someone who served with him, but perhaps someone at least might know what some of the abbreviations on his records mean?
Thank you for your service to our country. We owe you all a debt that can never be repaid.
Sincerely, Vyki (Evans) Sabo

Sgt. George E. Hankison -- Richard Hankison, 16:36:58 08/20/05 Sat
What a wonderful Web Page! I am so happy to have found it.
George Hankison was the uncle I never knew. He was killed in action approximately August 5, 1945 while flying The Hump. George was assigned to the 12th Combat Squadron of the 3rd Combat Cargo Group at the time of his death.
There is no family history in my family before my parent's marriage. Just people who were and post-war stories. I believe this to be due to the fact that news of my uncle's death came to the family after the surrender of Japan.
My father, the last Hankison of "the Greatest Generation" passed away in late 2000. He never spoke of Uncle George. If anyone knew George, I would appreciate being contacted about him.
Thanks in advance for any help in my search.

Happy Nelson -- Deby Arnold, 14:12:22 07/07/05 Thu
My Dad was stationed in India during WWII. I will have to get his papers from my sister for company information, etc. I do however have quite a few photographs that he took while in India. My dad's Christian name was Clifford Norman Nelson. He lived near Flaxton and Lignite, North Dakota all his life. He didn't talk about the war much but said he "flew over the hump". Dad suffered from what was then called "shell shock" when he came home. It would be really wonderful to be able find some fellow soldiers who knew him. In the near future I will scan the photos and post them if possible. Dad passed away in 1987.

My late husband, Malcolm Jefferson, flew the hump as a stowaway and was assigned to Merrill's Marauders. He departed to India on 19 Mar 42, arrived in India, 16 May 42 and departed to USA on 5 Aug 44 and arrived in USA 31 Aug 44. He left Charleston SC on board the SS Brazil after training at the Quartermaster School at Camp Lee VA. He was assigned to the 503rd AAF BU. The SS Brazil put in at Port Elizabeth, S Africa for rudder repairs. My husband was at an address at Port Elizabeth S Africa on 4 May 1942. Evidently the troops were entertained by local residents because he told me that when "they" discovered he liked rice pudding he was served it everywhere he went! The two questions I would like answered are - Where was the 503rd AAF BU located and does anyone remember him?

Unfortunately, my father, Wilfred Harrison, has Alzheimers Disease. While he never spoke of the war while we were growing up, he seems fixated on it now, but it is deeply disturbing to him. I suppose hearing so much about the current war on TV has triggered all of this. I would really like to understand more about what his participation was. He speaks a lot about going into the mountains, but it's hard to understand exactly what he did there. I have recently received a large set of boxes that have many pictures taken from his location in Burma, and would love to learn more about his experience there.

C47 by the name of Dinah Might/Col.Edward Thomson -- Dorothy Huff-Werkheiser, 18:24:29 03/24/05 Thu
Was hoping to find someone with a picture of LT.COL.Thomson and crew before they crashed May 29, 1945. Was informed in AAF Combat Units of WW II his C-47 name of plane was Dinah Might.
Was told there was a Bomber also called Dinah Might can anyone explain this?
Thank you Mr. Carmichael for your assistance on correcting me of location that Rangoon was in Burma not India.

Lt. George Fred Hammer -- Tom Kennedy, son-in-law, 08:49:22 03/23/05 Wed
I am looking for possible friends of my wife's father, Lt.George Fred Hammer who flew a C-46 over the Hump. On February 03, 1945 he was posted to the 3rd Combat Cargo Group, 9th Combat Cargo Squadron. The 9th Combat Cargo Squadron was deployed as part of the India-China Division of the ATC. He was flying from bases in Assam and Burma between April 23, to June 05, 1945. In October, 1945 he was at Kangwan Air Field, Shanghai, China. At the end of the war Lt. George Hammer remained in the US Army Air Corps and became a charter member of the Air Force Association in July of 1946. In the summer of 1946 he was assigned to the 20th Troop Carrier Squadron at Albrook Field, Canal Zone. On September, 1947 George Hammer was killed in a plane crash flying out of Lima, Peru. My wife, his daughter, was five at the time and knows very little about her father. I have lots of photos he took, but it is very difficult to put pictures, places and faces together. Does anyone who was in the 9th Squadron with him remember him?..Tom Kennedy

Looking from my fathers best friend -- Jim, 09:29:08 02/17/05 Thu
My father (Sgt Roy F Lomanno) and his best friend (Sgt James R Hogan, an orphan from upstate Pa) met at gunnery school and ended up on the same B-24 crew all through training. Then just before deployment their plane crashed in a takeoff accident and my father ended up in the hospital for a couple of months. The crew deployed without him. He was assigned to another crew when he returned to duty and flew combat in Europe. After the war he tried repeatedly to find James R Hogan but was unable to find a trace. All he knew is that he went to the CBI and might have been assigned to combat cargo. Has anybody ever heard of him or know how to go about searching. The Pilot and some of the crew were:
Sawyer, Lofton P. Pilot
Phillips, Vincent L Copilot
Thomas, Hershel P Nav
Goldwasser, Marton Radio
Hogan, James R Engineer
Hughes, Charles J Asst Radio
If anybody has ever heard of any of these guys I would appreciate hearing from you

His plane crashed into the mountains about August 1945 and several crewmen helped transport him down the mountain to an Indian Hospital. His back was split to the bone by a casement when the plane crashed.
Any information on him before the crash (he arrived for the missions about Dec. 1944), during or after, would be greatly appreciated.

Help in searching???? -- Dane Hanson, 14:23:40 01/18/05 Tue
Hello, I desperately need help in searching the CBI groups. I think I am in the right place, but not too sure. My grandfather was Floyd Hanson T.Sgt/Radio Operator who flew with the 10th A.F. after finishing duties in Europe. I am unsure where to look for any info. about what he did or where he was stationed as no one in my family seems to know. All we know is that he said he went to fly with the 10th supplying cargo and Chinese troops after November, 1944. If anyone has heard of or seen this name in there research, please let me know.
Otherwise, is there a place I can try and find out what group, or squadron he may have been in??? Again, I appreciate any info.! (I've tried the military service records, and they were lost in the 1973 fire.)
Thanks Again!
Dane Hanson

We have many military records, his blood chit and a Nambu pistol that his commanding officer authorized him to bring home as a war Souvenir. from Calcutta to Kunming. We also heard that staion was destroyed by Lolo tribesmen.
Would love to hear the rest of that story.

22 Transport Command 77 Squadron -- Tony Crawford, 12:58:29 06/03/04 Thu
I am searching for information or individuals that may have been in the ground crew with my uncle, Willard Hawk during WW II. He stated that their base was near a small town named Jorhat in India. I would appreciate any help or direction in this search.

2nd CCS info -- Robert Boyd, 20:18:52 05/28/04 Fri
I am interested in any info about the 2nd Combat Cargo Squadron. My father, H.L. Boyd was a radar mechanic in the 2nd CCS, was in Sylhet and Hathzari (India), Bhamo (Burma), and Tsyung and Peishiyi (China). His notes mention his C-47's pilot, Lt Lonnie King, and Crew Chief Sgt. Milton Ponder. Plane was number 888 on rudder.

Richard Gartman -- Marguerite Borst, 07:53:45 05/24/04 Mon
My story is very similiar to the many I have read on this site. My father, now deceased, was an aircraft mechanic in WWII, but never talked about his war experiences. However, once, I asked my mother what Dad did in the war, and she responded, "Oh! He flew the Hump!" And explained it was a mountain range that he flew over during missions. That was the extent of the explanation, but she was very clear that it was called the "Hump". I did not know until 40 years later, exactly what the "Hump" was and the meaning of those missions. If anyone comes across the name of Richard Gartman in their research, please contact me. I would like very much to find a confirmation that my father was indeed part of this mission. Oddly enough, his discharge papers did not mention it; only service in Morocco, France, Germany, and Italy. My father did re-enlist a few months after his WWII discharge, and went on to a 20 year career with the Air Force.

Capt Jay E. (Jed) Hall - 1943 CBI -- Karl Schmitkons, 12:28:59 01/29/03 Wed
I'm looking for any information on one of my father's cousins who flew in WWII. He was Capt Jay E. Hall and arrived in the CBI in August 1943. According to a couple pages from his self-sanitized personal ledger he went by way of "C. and K. to T." where he "assumed command of a new squadron, the 98th." I believe T. was in India. According to his ledger, shortly after that he got a chance "to fly one of the new four-engined aircraft." I know he eventually flew C-54s, as I have his flight handbook for that aircraft. Does anybody know what unit the "98th" was, where "T." was, and whether this service was in the "combat" units there or with the Air Transport Command? I am under the impression that the C-54s were predominantly in ATC service, however, Aug '43 seems a bit early to be flying one. Perhaps it was a C-87? I am hoping to get some time in the AFHRA here at Maxwell AFB, but it would be nice to be able to narrow the search down a bit first.

1347th Squadron Information -- Pam Outt, 19:06:28 12/27/03 Sat
I found my dad's scrap book from the war. He is 81 years old now and it is only on a rare occasion that he will talk about his WWII experience. After serving in the 15th then the 8th air force groups as a radio operator on B-17 - he was scheduled to come home and then called back to serve in CBI (his name is Robert R Moore and he served in the 1347th as a radio operator). He was on C-109's, C-87's, and C-54's. I am having a lot of difficulty discovering how the 1347th fit into the whole picture. I am trying to put it all together into a memory scrap book so that I, his granddaughter and future generations never forget what these men did to preserve out freedom. Any information that someone can supply would be a great help.
