Yes I believe it is possible to feel the soul and spirit, you can do this on a living person by closing your eyes holding your hands above their head while they are sitting down and lowering your hands till you feel the aura, which feels like energy sometimes warm of cold and sometimes like a windy sensation 2 to 4 inches above the head. So yes if you had your head on your mother, I guess you could well feel her leaving her mortal body and shell behind as she moved on into spirit.
