Subject: picking up something from people

I was just wondering if it was possible to pick up feelings of some sort from people. I know it sounds goofy and rather odd, but somes I will walk near someone or just look up and feel something. Such as what how they may be feeling at the moment. The other day I made eye contact with a man and I was suddenly hit with a strong feeling of depression. Its worst when I walk in crowds thats why I'm not a fan of going to malls or places with large crowds
