Dear Harry,

I am sad to hear about Charan's condition. I hope for the best and wish those who come into the MB pray for his recovery.

I will try to repost your message, here goes... hope it works.

He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother

It is about 10 am on Friday 4th February 2011, we are in Penang with our daughter Sheree at her condo. Most of yesterday we were with my in-laws and we were there too on the day before for the traditional new-year reunion dinner. We were getting ready to leave for Ipoh and we had planned for all our children to be with us for the weekend to celebrate the occasion. Then one after another all our phones started ringing but since we were doing various things, packing, having shower, attending to my granddaughter, we could not pick up any phone soon enough before it stopped ringing and another started ringing.

Little did we know that it was my sister desperately trying to convey the message to me that my brother Charan was in a critical condition in KPJ Specialist Hospital in JB and that I must make it to the hospital in all haste I could muster.

Sheree started making an online search for a plane ticket while I started repacking, my wife and I often share the luggage bag. That this was the 2nd day of new year made it worse. Nothing was available from Penang to Johor Bharu. We decided to rush to the Bayan Lepas Airport in the hope of finding a seat someone had given up. But at 5.50pm a seat was available by Air Asia and I grabbed it with gratitude.

Ah Kee, my brother’s friend, was at the airport to pick me up and whisk me to the hospital, and I found out that since the day before he had been running around all day and night helping my brother’s family, his 4 children and wife. About the same time my sister, her 2 girls and Andy, a former High School class-mate of my brother had arrived too.

Nothing prepared us for the sight we saw at the hospital, my brother lying there almost motionless except for the heaving of the chest by the ventilator and dozens of tubes and wires all over his body. Seeing him in such helplessness brought a flood of tears I could not control.

Since I have 2 sisters in US with children 2 in the twenties and 2 teenagers I thought it best to use facebook to keep them updated. My series of updates will better illustrate the situation we are in.

Friday night 4th February 2011

We are all here, mum, Biba (my sister), Sheila, Simi, Yati (Charan's wife) and his children, Nizam, Shafiq, Aida and Atika, The doctors are doing all they can, pumping in platelets, ventilator support, etc., and they are still trying their best.

Saturday 5th February 2011 – 9am

This morning Charan (Imran Shah) developed a fever and therefore we are really concerned for him. He is fighting for his life and is unconscious. Please spend some time in quiet prayer, there is not much more we can do! Moving him to another hospital is not an option.
Saturday 5th February -11am
Spoke to the doctor treating Charan, and was informed that his situation is worsening, loss of kidney function but they can't start dialysis because of low blood pressure?? or something, liver also not working well. All we can do is hope and pray.

Saturday 5th February - 2pm

Charan's friends have been coming in from Penang, KL and Indonesia. A great show of support! Lot's relatives from the wife's side to give the family moral support in their difficult hours while waiting and hoping for a good outcome to this shocking episode of his life.

Saturday 5th February – 4pm

They have boosted up Charan's (Imran Shah) blood pressure and are going to start dialysis soon. But there's not much they can do for the brain, lungs, liver. So the situation remains very critical

Saturday 5th February – 11pm

The doctors say there is no change in Charan's condition, he is on the dialysis machine and ventilator round the clock.
His old friend Geoffrey flew in earlier tonight. Some of his friends from Indonesia will be here Sunday morning.
It appeared to us that he is trying to show some response to the words of encouragement from his friend Sam, Geoffrey and I. His wife and children have also noticed this response to their attempts to communicate to him.
Perhaps they are decreasing his level of sedation, on the other hand we are not sure whether this is voluntary or involuntary. But when his daughter spoke to him his eyes started tearing and we feel encouraged by his response.
I said to him that he is under sedation and therefore he may have difficulty to respond to us because he might feel very frustrated in not being able to respond to our attempts to communicate with him.

It is almost 11pm now and we are all going back to the hotel for a shower and change of clothes.

Sunday 6th February - 12.00 midnight

Biba and I are back at the hospital but the ICU staff would not allow us in and we are locked out. We have given our mobile phone numbers to them and informed that we are just outside their locked door if there is any change in Charan’s condition. We will be here until his family members turn up in the morning.

Kiang, Shireen, Sharon and Sheree (my wife and anak-anak) drove down from Ipoh to Subang Airport but due to heavy traffic and torrential rain were too late for the last flight to JB and there have decided to stay the night in Sharon’s house in Subang area and drive to JB early Sunday morning.

Sunday 6th February - 3 am

I am here in the hospital, I have no idea how my brother is doing, all I know is that if they open the locked door to the ICU unit to call me in, it is bad news, meanwhile I sit here and wait and hope and pray because he ain’t heavy he is my brother.
