In reply to: little grasshopper 's message, "David's Condition" on 09:16:47 12/16/09 Wed

David had an angioplasty op to clear the blockage to the heart. This seems to be a common op these days. I was told the procedure was painless and he could watch the surgeons at work.

The months of October and November were a harrowing period for me. First a colonoscopy examination showed I had a large polyp at the junction of the rectum and colon. The polyp had turned ulcerous and there was potential that it would become cancerous. There was always blood in the stool. To make matters worst, before the op, the surgeon ordered a CT Scan and found a stone lodged at the urethra. This had to be removed before the polyp op. "Misfortune do not come singly" - was it Brutus who said this ?

Consequently, I had an operation on 23 Oct 09 to remove the stone and another operation on 11 Nov 09 to remove the polyp. Both operations were done at the University of Malaya Specialist Centre, a private wing of the UM Medical Centre. The ops cost me a fortune. But it was money well spent. Being a former government servant, I am entitled to free medical treatment. But I opted to have the ops done at the private wing of the hosp to ensure that the professors themselves conduct the operations. The UM Medical Centre is a teaching hosp and I was worried that a less experience surgeon, together with housemen or final year medical student, might be detailed to conduct the op.

The stone was removed by laser. They inserted a rod through the penis to blast the stone and cleaned out the debris from the urethra and bladder. It was most uncomfortable when the anaesthetic wore off. The penis was swollen like a phillips light bulb and there was searing pain whenever I passed urine ( with blood ). Toro had some comforting words though. According to him, it is "small price considering the pleasure it has given all these years". However, the whole thing cleared up within a week. I was only hospitalised for 1 night. In this condition, it would be a torture to view Ray's pics and wake up little johnny unnecessarily. Ray - now you understand ?

The polyp op turned out to be a major op. I was told that the procedure would take about 3 hours. Eventually, it took 6 hours and 10 minutes. The prof snipped off part of the rectum and colon ( 14 cm in all ) and rejoined them. Most people, including a surgeon at UMMC and a consultant surgeon at Assunta Hosp, told me that I might have to wear colotomy bag for 5 to 6 months to allow the joints to heal. I was a bit terrified. Imagine the discomfort and inconvenience in carrying out certain activities. However, the prof said it might not be necessary if the joints do not leak. He must have done a great job. I do not need the colotomy bag. Back to normal diet 3 days after the op and movement of bowels was normal. Had a check up 2 weeks ago. The prof pronounced me fit and completely cured. Only need a check up in a year's time.

Feeling on top of the world now. Relieved that the "sewage system" ( Doc Wizard's terminology ) is over hauled. Considering travelling North to do the needful and then South to visit my daughter and meet up with LG.

Thanks to Doc, Ray, KC and Toro for the comforting words during my ordeal.

Everyone, including the prof, were surprised by the speed of recovery from the op. I'll tell you why in my next posting.

Best wishes to everyone.
